Worst Decision Ever

Dear Mr. and Ms. Big Wigs of the city of Colorado Springs,

I understand that the economy is in the crapper. I know our country is trillions of dollars in debt. I agree that it is wise to cut back on spending and exercise some restraint in our budgeting decisions.

But I think you are making a huge mistake. Let me be clear …

[ahem]

Eliminating the fireworks show on the Fourth of July is a terrible idea.

It’s pretty much the worst idea in history of the world.

Of all 365 days each year, the Fourth of July is my favorite one. Why? Because of the fireworks. I look forward to that holiday more than any other one. (Even the Christian-y ones like Easter and Christmas.) I get all giddy and excited and do silly things like wear red, white and blue and put flag ribbons in my hair.

When I am watching fireworks my heart races. I have a smile on my face a mile wide. I revert back to my five-year-old self and for a while my “adult” cares disappear. For 40 minutes each year I’m allowed to be a kid and no one cares because everyone else is too busy being a kid themselves.

Of all the years to stop doing fireworks – something that makes people so happy and carefree – you pick this year when stress and anxiety are at an all time high.

So to whomever made this decision, for the sake of all who need our annual break from adult world, I’m begging you to please reconsider.

I’m sure there are plenty of other ways to save money without ruining the best day of the year.

Sincerely,
Becky Tschamler

  1. It sure feels like a knee jerk reaction…”How can we stick it to the taxpayers and make it hurt?”The fireworks display at the Air Force Academy is usually pretty good and Palmer Lake seems to be getting better every year. In other words…you’ve got options!

  2. I hope you got this to the city ‘people’ somehow. It seems like a lame choice to me too. I mean, it’s not like they’re going to fix the potholes in Academy or Platte because of the savings… (no really, I just don’t think they’re going to do that anyhow!)

  3. I heard about that today, too, and of course thought of you. I had a good time last year at the show in Palmer Lake, but it sure was a pain getting out of there! Maybe we can bike there from a mile or two away… with packs on our backs for all the yummy treats and games and such.

  4. Go to the Sky sox… not to put to fine of point on it… hose the city. They are mad the last tax increases did not go through and we are making them be accountable for stuff they are doing… accountable government, what a concept.

  5. They did this in Grand Rapids a couple years ago until a corporate donor decided to sponsor it. So now we have the Amway/Meijer (can’t remember) 4th of July. Don’t loose heart, they could be rescued.

  6. Yeah Wyoming! You're all welcome! We have TWO fantastic fireworks shows — one on the 3rd and the other on the 4th — one at Big Red (Ucross Foundation) and one at the Big Horn Equestrian Center in Big Horn, WY. Both are outstanding fireworks shows and choreographed to music. But Northern Wyoming may be a ways for you all to come — so stay a week and don't miss the Big Horn Mountain Festival in Buffalo, WY on July 10-12 — check out our website at: http://www.bighornmountainfestival.com. Headliners include our regular performers, Anne & Pete Sibley, who just won Prairie Home Compassion's "Great American Duet Sing-Off!" Woohoo! Wyoming is where it's at!

  7. Albany has a pretty rockin’ show, and we could definitely reserve two seats for you this year! Seriously, come on out. Micah special requested.
